N – New Bonnet for Dee Dee

For this year’s A to Z Challenge, I will be posting an event for that date involving someone in my family tree. Of course it will also involve the letter of the day. It may be a birth, a death, a christening, a journal entry, a letter or a newspaper article. If the entry is a news item, it will be transcribed immediately below. Graham, aIso her paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Elkins, Sr.; her aunts. -Misses Daisy and Alice Turner, and Mrs. Elizabeth Roberts, all were present to witness the event. The baby’s godparents. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Franklin, of Oakland, Calif., sent their godchild a beautiful bonnet for the christening.

Doris Diane Elkins is my first cousin. Our mothers, Mary V. and Doris Graham, were sisters. My sister wondered why our mother wasn’t there. The reason was because she was married and living in San Francisco where my father was co-pastor at Fellowship Church, non-denominational.

  1. That was quite a family gathering and a fancy bonnet. Would a bonnet be a “Normal” christening gift? I’ve always thought of bracelets or silver cups. Just curious about customs.

    1. No idea about gifts. It seems I know little about christenings. My own took place when I was about 18 months when we came home to Detroit for a visit. The little blurb in the paper didn’t mention any gifts. Or godparents. Did I have God parents?? Lost information.

    1. I think both families already attended the same church and it would happen during the Sunday service. But it was a big event in the family. She was the first grandchild on one side and the second on the other side so, new generation! Exciting!

  2. Yes. In the 1940s it was customary for babies to wear bonnets during christening. They also wore gowns, vests and bonnets traditionally.

  3. Love your theme. Remember when people used to have slide shows of their vacations? I loved those as a child and have loved family photos since then- anyone’s family photos. What fun this is!

    1. I’m like that about photos too. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a slide show of vacations though. Have seen photos though. Glad you’re enjoying.

  4. Wow, seeing mommy and Cousin MJ in their bonnets was priceless and surreal! Seeing them together this June really illustrates how connected our family has remained.
