My father was also born in August 1946 so it is nice to see what else happened during that time period. I didn’t know that Booker T Washington was on the half dollar. I learned something new today.
I didn’t either. I wonder if they issue special half dollars for a limited period of time and then retire them. I have never seen one.
From my understanding, some of the coins were commemorative and indeed only for a limited time period. Booker T’s bust was in circulation from 1946-1951. The description and analysis of the coin on this page is well worth the read http://www.ngccoin.com/ngccoinexplorer/CoinDetail.aspx?CoinID=19406
Thank you for the link, Tara.
You’re welcome. If you’re interested in reading more, I found a 3 part series of articles regarding African-Americans on coins. Part 1 has a newspaper clip of Booker T’s daughter (picture included) suing for breach of contract concerning the coinage.
I was born in 1946 too – you’ve done us proud with this! Pretty amazing times we’ve lived in.
And that was only the year we were born!
I’ve spent the last 40 minutes trying to take it ALL in! What a piece of historic art Kristin! I really need a good cup of coffee and another hour! BEAUTIFUL!:)
Thanks Luckie. I do like making collages. Learned a lot about 1946 too.
Cheers, it was a very good year.
