Blanche, Theresa and Thomas Averette

Theresa, Blanche/Celeste and Thomas Reed/Averit on Theresa’s birthday. 1919, Indianapolis, IN

Although I haven’t participated in Sepia Saturday for a long time, when I saw the prompt for today I thought of the above photo, which I have never shared on Sepia Saturday and thought it was a good match. So, here I am.

When Hugh Reed’s second daughter was born, she was named after his baby sister, my grandmother. When I found the birth certificate online, I was surprised to find that the baby originally had my grandmother’s full name, Pearl Doris. Later, she was called Theresa Pearl. Did the parents decide on Theresa later because it sounded more “posh”? I will never know.

  1. Lovely portraits both. Seeing the shoes in the first photo adds a nice contrast to their bright clothes. I can’t imagine the time it took for mother to lace/button up such sturdy footwear. Pearl and Albert’s portrait is beautiful. Her direct gaze into the lens gives it a special power.

Glad to have you back at Sepia Saturday, Kristin. We’ve missed you. Hope one of Allan’s themes will inspire another return soon.

    1. I miss Sepia Saturday too. Often I can’t think of a photo to match the prompt that I haven’t already used on Sepia Saturday. Maybe I should try looking at the photo from a different angle, or maybe I’ve found new information about the photo.

  2. Hey – good to ‘see’ you. Your post is perfect for the prompt. Come back to us. We miss you! And while Theresa is a fine name, I think Pearl is every bit as nice and in good company along with Pearl S. Buck, a lovely woman named Pearl who sang soprano along with me in church choir, and sometimes, because my last name sounds like Pearl, I’ll be called Pearl & I don’t mind a bit. 🙂 Seriously, though, please do ‘visit’ us more often!!!

    1. I also think Pearl is a nice name, since it was my grandmother’s name and my sister’s name and many cousins have Pearl as their middle name.

Hopefully I will be visiting more often, even if years ago I used the photo the prompt brings to mind.

  3. Welcome back, Kristin, and with such a lovely family group. I was intrigued by the fancy hat/ bonnet on Teresa’s head. Do feel free to show images you may have featured in the past. I am sure we will still enjoy seeing how you link them to the prompt. .

    1. Good question about the hat. I had thought it was a big bow, which little girls often wore during those days. Looking closer it does look more like a hat. Maybe a birthday party hat?
